The $FIRSTNAME$ tag does not work in the Thank You page of my custom Opt-In form when I fill it out with a test subscriber. Why?

Replacement tags do not work in pages, but only in communications (emails, newsletters, autoresponders). The Thank You page is just a landing page where people are taken to after they subscribe.
