Why is my external domain name no longer pointed to my Console website?

We are periodically checking the validity of the link between the custom domain and the console, and if a custom domain fails this check the checkbox is un-checked. We do this because sometimes people unlink their custom domain, but don't update the console settings, and their subdomain is no longer indexed by search engines.
